How to choose a shaving cabinet

Four checks that decide which cabinet fits, in the order a builder would do them.

Width: up to your vanity

We generally recommend the largest size that’s no wider than your vanity. When in doubt, size up, if the space allows it; if a side wall, tiles or the door make it tight, go one size down.

Recessed or on the wall

Every model can be recessed except the Amalfi, which is surface-mounted only. Cut the opening to the factory rough-in size with no clearance added, for example 884 × 684 × 98 mm for a Milan or Madrid 900. The rough-in size for every model is listed further down this page and on each cabinet’s product page. Check it against your cabinet before cutting.

Height: 100–200 mm above the tap

Leave 100–200 mm between the top of the tap (or splashback) and the bottom of the cabinet, never less than 100 mm, so the doors swing clear.

Power: plan it early

Every cabinet is hardwired, with no plug. A licensed electrician connects it and the power point inside; leave the supply behind the top of the cabinet, and agree the position before the wall is sheeted.

Can these cabinets be recessed into the wall?

Every cabinet here can be recessed or fixed flat to the wall, except the Amalfi Cabinet, which is surface-mounted only. Recessed, the body sits in a framed wall cavity and only the mirror doors sit in front. Cut the opening to the cabinet’s factory rough-in size, with no clearance added: Milan and Madrid 884 × 684 mm (900), 1184 × 684 mm (1200) and 1484 × 684 mm (1500); Santander 857.8 × 600 mm; Lucca 500 × 532 mm; Positano 500 × 650 mm; Riviera 450 × 550 mm (1000 tall) and 450 × 700 mm (1150 tall). Every opening is 98 mm deep. The 750 Milan and Madrid have no factory figure yet, so measure the body. These sizes are for reference only: check them against your cabinet before anyone cuts. How far do they stick out, and will the doors clear my tap?

Most are 117 mm deep (the Riviera and Positano 118 mm, the Amalfi 122 mm), which is slim for a shaving cabinet. Leave 100–200 mm between the top of the tap (or splashback) and the bottom of the cabinet, never less than 100 mm, so the doors swing clear of the tap. Recessing takes most of that depth back into the wall.

What size cabinet suits my vanity?

We generally recommend the largest size that’s no wider than your vanity. When in doubt, size up, if the space allows it; if a side wall, tiles or the door make it tight, go one size down. The Milan and Madrid come in 750, 900, 1200 and 1500 mm, so most vanities have a near-exact match. Do I need an electrician?

Yes. Every cabinet is hardwired, with no plug, so a licensed electrician connects it, including the power point inside. The lead leaves the back of the cabinet at the top, so ask for the supply there. If you’re recessing, the electrician and the builder need to agree the position before the wall is sheeted.

Can the 1200 mm and 1500 mm cabinets be returned for change of mind?

Mirror cabinets and shaving cabinets

A bathroom mirror cabinet, or shaving cabinet, is a mirror with storage behind it. The doors are the mirror. Behind them are shelves for the things that would otherwise end up on the vanity.

We make seven, from 450 to 1500 mm wide, in rectangular, arch, oval, round and organic shapes. Every one has adjustable glass shelves, a mirrored back panel, a light that comes on when you open the door, and a power point inside. They suit main bathrooms, ensuites and powder rooms where bench space is tight. LED bathroom mirror cabinets with lights

The light is built into the mirror on every model. A touch switch changes it between warm, neutral and cool white: softer at night, brighter for shaving or make-up. Every cabinet also dims, and the Santander and Amalfi remember your last setting.

Each cabinet has a demister pad behind the glass, so the mirror clears after a hot shower. It switches itself off after an hour. All seven have Bluetooth audio, and the Milan, Madrid, Santander and Lucca have a built-in magnifying mirror.

Recessed and surface-mounted shaving cabinets

Six of the seven can go into the wall or on it: the Milan, Madrid, Santander, Lucca, Positano and Riviera. The Amalfi mounts on the wall only.

Recessing means the body sits in a framed cavity and only the doors sit proud of the wall. Cut the opening to the factory rough-in size. That’s the size of the body with nothing added, because the doors cover the edges. The openings, width × height × depth:

  • Milan and Madrid 900: 884 × 684 × 98 mm
  • Milan and Madrid 1200: 1184 × 684 × 98 mm
  • Milan and Madrid 1500: 1484 × 684 × 98 mm
  • Santander: 857.8 × 600 × 98 mm
  • Lucca: 500 × 532 × 98 mm
  • Positano: 500 × 650 × 98 mm
  • Riviera 1000: 450 × 550 × 98 mm
  • Riviera 1150: 450 × 700 × 98 mm

Mirror cabinet sizes from 450 to 1500 mm

We generally recommend the largest size that’s no wider than your vanity. When in doubt, size up, if the space allows it; if a side wall, tiles or the door make it tight, go one size down. A 1200 mm vanity usually takes a 1200 mm cabinet.

Arch, round, oval and rectangular mirror cabinets

Arch. The Santander is a wide arch, 1200 × 800 mm. Its three doors hinge on the inside dividers, so none swings past the sides. The Positano is a slim arch, 500 × 900 mm, with one left-hinged door.

Round. The Amalfi is 800 mm across, with one centre door hinged on the left. It mounts on the wall, not in it.

Oval. The Riviera is 450 mm wide and 1000 or 1150 mm tall, with one left-hinged door.

Rectangular. The Milan and Madrid are 700 mm tall in four widths. The 750 and 900 have two doors; the 1200 and 1500 have three.

Organic. The Lucca has a soft, irregular outline, 760 × 890 mm, with two doors that open from the middle.

Power, installation and compliance

Every cabinet is hardwired to 220–240 V. There’s no plug, so a licensed electrician connects it, power point included. That power point is an IP-rated 10 A outlet in the top section, so a toothbrush or shaver can charge behind the doors.

The power lead comes out the back at the top, so ask your electrician to bring the supply there. If you’re recessing, get your electrician and builder to agree the position before the wall is sheeted. Do LED mirrors need an electrician? explains what to book.

All seven are rated IP44, which means they’re protected against splashing water. Your electrician will check the position suits the bathroom zones and RCD protection under AS/NZS 3000. Measure from the top of your tallest tap, not the benchtop. That’s where most height mistakes happen. Leave 100–200 mm between the top of the tap (or splashback) and the bottom of the cabinet, and never less than 100 mm, so the doors clear the tap.
